  Uganda: Invoke Contractor's Performance Bond

TWO major road re-sealing contracts are to be terminated forthwith following failure by the contractor to fulfill his obligations.

Zzimwe Construction Company is set to lose the contracts for the resurfacing of the Kibuye-Ndeeba stretch of the Masaka Road, and the Nakulabye-Lubigi road, the Ministry of Works has said. The ministry has been consulting the Solicitor-General and public procurement authorities on procedure and the contracts are set to be stopped next month.

Early this week, residents in the heavily populated Ndeeba suburb of Kampala picketed against the slow progress of a six-month job that started over a year ago. This was not the first time that residents have protested the terrible nature of the road, whose tarmac was stripped away leaving a rutted mess that alternates between the unhealthily dusty and the maddeningly muddy.

Fond du Lac contractor expanding, adding jobs

J-F Ahern is spending five (M) million dollars to expand its facility. Once completed next spring, the contractor plans to add another 165 jobs.

C-E-O Tripp Ahern says its expansion is made possible by a strong industrial and commercial construction market in Wisconsin and the Midwest.

J-F Ahren has branch offices in seven states, with its headquarters in Fond du Lac.

Alongkorn, Yaowaret drop all lawsuits

Democrat Alongkorn Polabutr and Thai Rak Thai's Yaowaret Shinawatra yesterday agreed to drop all lawsuits over bribe allegations against each other. Their lawyers yesterday informed the Civil Court of both parties' decisions to withdraw the suits before the first hearing of witnesses in a 500-million-baht defamation suit against Mr Alongkorn, a deputy leader of the Democrat party.

Mrs Yaowaret, a younger sister of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, lodged the suit after Mr Alongkorn accused her and others of demanding a 300-million-baht kickback from a contractor vying for a car park building contract at the new Suvarnabhumi airport.

The contractor, Latthaphol Kesakothin, had paid an advance instalment but failed to win the contract.

A series of lawsuits and counter-lawsuits followed.
