The Blue Book of Building and Construction Announces an Alliance ...

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Blue Book is pleased to announce a strategic alliance with the RSA (Reprographer's Services Association). In an effort to facilitate the time-sensitive bidding stage of a project, The Blue Book has integrated its Invitation to Bid Messaging service within the RSA members' online plan room offerings, including PlanCommand™ and e-Distribution. This integration will enable users of those services (owners, architects and general contractors) to quickly and easily find the contractors and suppliers that they need for a project within The Blue Book's industry-leading database and message them via email or fax for free, using the Blue Book's Invitation to Bid Messaging Service. The Invitation to Bid will include a link back to the user's private plan room in PlanCommand or e-Distribution.

Contractor on botched Iraq construction scrutinized

WASHINGTON -- The contractor that botched construction of a $75 million police academy in Baghdad so badly that human waste dripped from the ceilings has produced shoddy work on 13 out of 14 projects reviewed by federal auditors, the top official monitoring Iraq's reconstruction told Congress yesterday.

In a House hearing on what has gone wrong with reconstruction contracts in Iraq, Parsons Corp. quickly became the focus, taking bipartisan heat for its record of falling short on critical projects. The Pasadena, Calif., firm was supposed to build facilities at the heart of the $21 billion US-led reconstruction program, including fire stations, border forts, and healthcare centers. But inspectors have found a litany of flaws in the firm's work. The one project reviewed by auditors that was being constructed correctly, a prison, was taken away from Parsons before its completion because of escalating costs.

Newark to appeal $38M award to reservoir contractor

NEWARK -- Newark said today it plans to appeal the $38.4 million settlement a federal jury awarded to a contracting firm that claimed it was wrongly fired from the citys reservoir project.

The jury last week awarded Donald M. Durkin Contracting $38.4 million, well above the citys $30 million annual budget. Durkin received $13.4 million for being fired improperly from working on the citys reservoir in February 2004 and an additional $25 million for violation of the firms constitutional rights.

In a separate claim, the jury ordered Newark to pay $567,000 to reservoir designer URS Corp. for unpaid bills and legal fees related to the reservoir.

The original project cost was $19 million.

City leaders met in an executive session at the end of tonights regularly scheduled council meeting to discuss their next steps.

Bermuda Landscape Contractor's Death Prompts Calls for Better ...

The death of a landscape contractor in Bermuda struck by a large branch that fell from a tree he was helping to lop has brought renewed calls for stricter controls on the training and certification of workers involved in potentially dangerous jobs.

The owners of two of the largest landscaping companies in Bermuda, along with a qualified tree care professional and trainer, say there needs to be proper regulation of the industry as happens in many other countries.

The circumstances surrounding the death of the 34-year-old Portuguese man, believed to be a father-of-one with another child on the way, are still being investigated.

He was killed while working on a casuarina tree in a garden. The tree was the last in a row that was being cut back by a team from Island Construction and Landscaping Services.
