The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party is frowning at what it describes as unwarranted attacks on Contractor General Greg Christie by Government Members on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament. In a statement Wednesday, Opposition Leader Bruce Golding left little doubt that he is of the view that the attacks over the last two weeks, have been orchestrated to undermine Mr. Christie's credibility.Mr. Golding charged that Government members are upset by pronouncements Mr. Christie made in discharging his statutory duties.He accused Government members, led by K.D. Knight of turning the Sandals Whitehouse into charade.The Opposition Leader contended that Mr. Knight has attempted to put Mr. Christie on trial instead of the functionaries in the project which wracked up cost overruns of in excess of US$40 million.Mr.
NEWARK -- Newark said today it plans to appeal the $38.4 million settlement a federal jury awarded to a contracting firm that claimed it was wrongly fired from the citys reservoir project. The jury last week awarded Donald M. Durkin Contracting $38.4 million, well above the citys $30 million annual budget. Durkin received $13.4 million for being fired improperly from working on the citys reservoir in February 2004 and an additional $25 million for violation of the firms constitutional rights. In a separate claim, the jury ordered Newark to pay $567,000 to reservoir designer URS Corp. for unpaid bills and legal fees related to the reservoir. The original project cost was $19 million. City leaders met in an executive session at the end of tonights regularly scheduled council meeting to discuss their next steps.
VietNamNet Bridge - The Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam) on Oct.16 signed a $305 million contract to build the 450MW Nhon Trach 1 Power Plant with the Vietnam Construction and Machinery Installation Corporation (Lilama). Located in Nhon Trach district, southern Dong Nai province, the plant, which includes two gas turbines, two heat retrieving steam generators and one steam turbine, will use gas materials from the Nam Con Son oil field. The project will be conducted by a bidder group including Lilama and the Construction Corporation No.1. Once operational in December 2008, the plant will generate nearly 4 billion Kwh annually, significantly contributing to stabilising the national power supply. Alstom and Marubeni will supply the main equipment for the plant.
