A construction worker was injured in a fall from a Hollywood building under construction Saturday -- at least the third such accident this week. Hollywood Fire-Rescue spokesman Matt Phillips said the worker fell at about 3:45 p.m. from some scaffolding at a building that is under construction at 2227 N. Federal Hwy. ''He fell approximately, from what dispatch told me, 30 feet,'' Phillips said. The man, whose name and age were not immediately known, was taken by ambulance to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. On Wednesday, pipe fitter Clay Fletcher Sr. of Tennessee died after falling 40 feet from the new casino under construction at the Pompano Park racetrack in Pompano Beach. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating that accident.
IT Consultants Direct has launched a contractor induction service to provide IT contractors a fixed finder's fee, replacing the industry standard of commission. Company managing director Richard Simmons says: “We are convinced that our clients will welcome the fixed fee approach as an opportunity to greatly reduce their recruiting costs whilst acquiring contractors of the highest calibre." The service operates like any other contract vacancy. The difference comes when the client selects a candidate. A straightforward finder's fee of £750 (plus VAT) is charged, and the contractor and client then can negotiate their own fees and terms. .
Five Lockheed Martin facilities were honored last week with James S. Cogswell Awards for outstanding achievement in industrial security. The five award-winning facilities, all part of Lockheed Martin's Missiles and Fire Control business unit, are located in Camden, Ark.; Chelmsford, Mass.; Dallas; Ocala, Fla.; and Troy, Ala. The announcement of the Cogswell award winners was made at the annual seminar of ASIS International in San Diego. The Cogswell award is the highest recognition bestowed annually by the U.S. Defense Security Service (DSS) on a defense contractor. This year, only 29 facilities were selected to receive the award out of more than 11,000 eligible. "What a tremendous honor it is for five of our facilities to be recognized by DSS with the Cogswell Award," said James F.

INDIANAPOLIS - The state accused a job-training contractor Thursday of bilking it out of as much as $180,000 through fraudulent billing. The Marion County prosecutor's office filed a theft charge against Eric P. Ahlbrand, the former Indianapolis office manager for Jobworks Inc., and an obstruction of justice charge against a current employee, Ernest B. Walker, Inspector General David Thomas said. An internal audit by the Family and Social Services Administration found the JobWorks office in Indianapolis billed the state for job-training hours and training that welfare recipients did not attend between Oct. 1, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2003. After the company learned it was being audited, it tried to alter client files, Thomas said. The state could demand that JobWorks repay the state about $180,000, Thomas said.
