ADIH TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION OF $US 600 MLN BEIRUT GATE

DUBAI, Oct 16 Asia Pulse - The Abu Dhabi Investment House (ADIH) has announced that its $US600 million project in the centre of Beirut will go ahead, and four world-renowned architects are already in the Lebanese capital to finalise the design master plan. The architects are in Beirut to take part in the final (of four) design workshops for Beirut Gate, which will be an integrated commercial and residential sea view project in the Beirut Central District, commonly known as Solidere. The development will comprise eight plots spread over 21,448 square metres and a built-up area of 178,500 square metres overlooking the famous Martyrs' Square of Lebanon, downtown Beirut and the Mediterranean. Announcing the project, Nicholas Fraser, ADIH's Executive Director of Real Estate said: "We are excited that this project is ready to proceed and we are sure this development will provide a major boost for the people of Beirut and the economy of Lebanon.

Five Points preps for first new construction

In what has become a weekly tradition, a long-time friend and I gather every Saturday afternoon at Bill Carney's earthy 3 Crow Bar in East Nashville's Five Points to quaff some cold beer and discuss music, film, sports, politics and my obsession with the built environment.

Over time, my buddy (who will go unnamed given that he is a reserved gentleman who values his privacy) has developed an interest in the city's built fabric that sometimes rivals that of this writer.

As such, my friend and I often discuss our concern regarding the “dead space" ringing the Five Points intersection.

The hideous Citgo property and the underutilized Cumberland Hardware mulch pit, in particular, need new uses, we agree.

Thus, my friend of 30 years will be pleased to know that some quality infill is slated for the southeast corner of Woodland and 11th, a tiny sliver of surface parking owned by Tony Carletello, Melissa Eubanks and Mike Reeves.

THE HELP TEAM: CONSUMER ALERT

Before hiring a contractor, obtain three estimates specifying such items as the quality and type of materials to be used and how long it would take to complete the work.

Don't choose a contractor based on price alone: Ask for references and how long a contractor has been in the business, check out work done and the contractor's license number.

Request a Certificate of Competency card and a driver's license; the names should be the same. Licensed contractors are required to include their Certificate of Competency license number in all advertising and on vehicles used to perform work.

Ask if your contractor has any unresolved complaints and if his or her license has ever been revoked or suspended.

To research companies or agents registered with the state go to: http://ccfcorp.dos.state.fl.us/ corpweb/inquiry/cormenu.html

Check the Better Business Bureau Web site for complaints filed against the company: www.bbb.org

Licensed contractors must have general liability, property damage and workers' compensation insurance in effect at all times.

Contractor guilty of health and safety failings

A CONTRACTOR has been found guilty of a catalogue of health and safety errors after a worker fell to his death.

Warrington Crown Court heard David Moran, aged 31, had no demolition or construction qualifications for the cash-in hand job at Chesford Grange, Woolston, where he was killed in September 2002.

He died after falling eight feet through a fragile roof he had been instructed to work on.

Dig at construction site represents great archaeological find

PHOENIX -- An archeologist who excavated the remains of a prehistoric Hohokam village from a downtown construction site uncovered the earliest known pit houses in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The thousands of artifacts from the dig at the construction site for the new Phoenix Convention Center represent one of the metro area's greatest archaeological finds.

Archeologist Mark Hackbarth and his crew discovered nearly 40 Hohokam pit houses by the time their dig finished in early September. They also filled 3,500 sacks with artifacts and dirt to be studied for more clues about the people who first found a way to live in the desert.

After each artifact is analyzed, the archaeologists will have an idea of how long people stayed at this location, how many lived here and what kind of crops they grew and traded.
