FEDERAL GRANT TO SEED NEW MINORITY-OWNED CONSTRUCTION BUSINESSES ...

Cleveland -- ShoreBank Enterprise Cleveland (SEC) has been awarded a $700,000 grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services to expand its efforts to develop and nurture small businesses, especially minority-owned construction firms in the Cleveland community.

ShoreBank Enterprise Cleveland, a non-profit affiliate of ShoreBank Corporation, will use the federal grant to fuel ShoreGrowth, a small business loan fund. Through the fund, SEC increases the accessibility of loans, investments and other financial resources that helps foster the success of young and growing companies in Clevelands urban neighborhoods.

The new money will augment our ability to provide seed capital and business advisory services that will develop new opportunities for residents in the construction sector that will benefit the entire community, said Chris Warren, President, ShoreBank Enterprise Cleveland. The grant represents our ongoing commitment to helping Cleveland companies and residents to secure a larger share of the construction contracts and projects throughout the region, added Warren.

Roni Thompson came to ShoreBank Enterprise Cleveland for help two years ago as she was just beginning R.L.

PAC to continue grilling Contractor-General Tuesday

Contractor-General Greg Christie will be back in the hot seat Tuesday when the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament continues its probe into the cost overruns on the Sandals Whitehouse Project.

When he appeared before the Committee last week, Mr. Christie came under intense criticism from Government members who attempted to punch holes into the integrity, fairness and reliability of the methods used to uncover the massive overruns.Despite coming under pressure, Mr. Christie stoutly defended the credibility of his report into the controversial Sandals Whitehouse Project.Government member KD Knight argued that the Contractor-General did a poor job as he did not attempt to get the Urban Development Corporation to submit documents which had been requested.Mr. Knight was in turn chided by Opposition members who accused him of attacking the Contractor General.

Motorists won't like Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day this year will be hard to forget for drivers facing an overnight closure of Highway 401 at Homer Watson Boulevard.

Homer Watson Boulevard will also shut for the night, as workers move in to raze an old bridge over the 401.

The 10-hour demolition blitz will mark the halfway point of the two-year, $19-million interchange expansion project that's brought daily gridlock to Kitchener's western Highway 401 access.

News of another year of construction didn't impress Betty Allensen, who has to drive through the construction mess twice a day.

"I'm so frustrated," she said yesterday, while pumping gas into her car at the Sunoco station at New Dundee Road and Homer Watson.

"I don't know if I'll be glad it's over in the end or not."

Her office is nearby, on the Kitchener side of the construction.

Five Lockheed plants win defense contractor award

Five Lockheed Martin facilities were honored last week with James S. Cogswell Awards for outstanding achievement in industrial security. The five award-winning facilities, all part of Lockheed Martin's Missiles and Fire Control business unit, are located in Camden, Ark.; Chelmsford, Mass.; Dallas; Ocala, Fla.; and Troy, Ala.

The announcement of the Cogswell award winners was made at the annual seminar of ASIS International in San Diego.

The Cogswell award is the highest recognition bestowed annually by the U.S. Defense Security Service (DSS) on a defense contractor. This year, only 29 facilities were selected to receive the award out of more than 11,000 eligible.

"What a tremendous honor it is for five of our facilities to be recognized by DSS with the Cogswell Award," said James F.

State Licensing Board Hands Down Punishment to Arrested Contractor

There's new information about an Acadiana contractor charged with taking ten of thousands of dollars from a Lafayette homeowner.

Last month, TV 10 reported that Lafayette Parish sheriff's deputies arrested 39-year-old Scott Fontenot for theft.

Investigators say Fontenot agreed to construct an addition to a family's home and then took off with $43,000.

Wednesday, the state licensing board gave Fontenot a $1,000 fine and ordered him to cease and desist work on any other projects.

Contractor issues like this are a growing concern during hurricane recovery.

There continues to be an increase in new home construction in Lafayette more than a year after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

In August of '05, there were 64 permits issued to build new homes.
